About Your Moontime
Every month a sexually mature female's ovary releases an egg cell that travels towards the uterus through the Fallopian tube. The uterus prepares for a possible pregnancy by developing a uterine lining (endometrium) made of tissue and blood vessels. Should the egg not be fertilized, pregnancy does not occur and the uterine lining is shed and it exits the body through the vagina as a mixture of blood and tissue over a course of 3 to 7 days. This is called menstruation or a period (also known as moontime). The cycle starts over again with an egg that begins to mature in one of the ovaries. This cycle is called menstrual cycle and is generally 25 to 35 days long.
It amounts to about 2 tablespoons (30 milliliters). To catch the blood and prevent stains on her clothes, a girl can wear a menstrual pad, which sticks to her underwear, or a tampon, which is inserted into the vagina.
Recommended Products - Whilst tampons are handy if you plan to do sports or wear a figure-hugging outfit, they are best avoided as the product of choice as they can increase cramping as an introduced object often lessen the flow, impeding the shedding of uterine lining and increasing the length of your menses. Mainstream brands of pads should be avoided as they contain carcinogenic materials which can lead to cervical cancer. Many supermarkets now sell natural cotton products. Also the use of washable cloth pads available and menstrual cups can save both the environment and your pocket.
